Used Dump Truck for South Africa: Price & Import Tips to Polokwane

Buying One Used Dump Truck for South Africa - A Personal Buyer's Guide

Individual buyers in South Africa are increasingly importing a single used dump truck directly from China. The math is simple: a certified used HOWO or SHACMAN tipper at 30-50% below local dealer prices, with solid parts support in Johannesburg and Polokwane. But a private import is different from a fleet order - documentation, age limits and inland logistics matter more when you are buying one unit, not ten. Here is what to check before you send a deposit.

1. Which Tonnage Should You Choose?

South African roads and the Limpopo mining belt demand different specs. The two configurations most personal buyers choose:

ConfigurationPayloadTypical EngineBest For
HOWO 6x4 Dump (10-wheeler)20-25tWD615.47, 371HPSand, gravel, municipal contracts, farm haulage
HOWO / SHACMAN 8x4 Dump (12-wheeler)30-35tWD615.47 / WP12.430, 371-430HPMining stone, overburden, heavy quarry work

For a first personal purchase in Limpopo, the 6x4 with a 5.8 x 2.55 x 1.7 m body is the safest balance - lighter on tyres, easier to manoeuvre, and within most municipal weight limits. If you intend to run mine contracts, step up to the 8x4.

2. FOB vs CIF: What the Price to Polokwane Really Means

Quotations for used dump trucks usually come in two forms:

  • FOB (Free On Board): the price covers the truck at the Chinese port (Tianjin or Qingdao). Freight, insurance and inland South African transport are on you - realistic for buyers with their own clearing setup.
  • CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): includes ocean freight and marine insurance to your named port. For a single unit to South Africa, CIF is usually simpler and often cheaper overall.

Important: Polokwane is inland, about 260 km from Durban. A CIF quote "to Polokwane" should clearly state whether inland transport from Durban or Richards Bay is included - many exporters quote CIF to port only. Confirm before comparing prices.

3. Importing a Single Truck as a Private Buyer

  • Drive side: South Africa drives on the left - you need a right-hand drive (RHD) unit or a documented LHD-to-RHD conversion.
  • Age and NRCS compliance: used vehicle imports to South Africa are subject to age limits and NRCS/SABS conformity requirements. Confirm the current rules for your unit's model year before you buy - an exporter familiar with the SA market will guide you.
  • Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the pre-shipment inspection report. Your clearing agent in Durban handles duty assessment (used trucks attract import duty plus VAT).
  • Payment for one unit: standard terms are 30% T/T deposit and 70% before release of shipping documents, or L/C. For individual buyers we also provide loading videos so you only pay the balance against verified progress.

4. What "Inspected and Export-Ready" Means on a Real Unit

Before you commit to any stock, ask for the inspection evidence - not a photo of a clean cab:

  • Engine cold-start video and oil pressure reading (idle ≥1.5 bar)
  • ECU data: true mileage, total engine hours, fault codes
  • Chassis NDT report for frame cracks at spring hangers
  • Tipper body: floor plate thickness, hoist cylinders, hydraulic system check
  • Tyre depth (12R22.5) and brake test results

If the seller cannot produce these, walk away. Every unit we export ships with a video inspection report and a first-phase spare parts kit option - because a single truck that breaks down costs you far more than the parts ever will.
